Healing Inguinal Hernia With Exercise

Is It Possible?

If you don’t already follow me, you probably came across this page because you were doing an internet search to see if it is possible to heal an inguinal hernia with exercise. You have probably been seeing about a million other web pages that say that it is not possible, and that the only way to fix a hernia is through surgery.

Well, I’m here to tell you that that is 100% bullshit! If you read through this blog you can see my whole story about trying to heal my inguinal hernia naturally without surgery. Why I started, what I had to work through, everything. But I’ll make a long story short here.

I’ve had an inguinal hernia for over 4 years. It was about the size of 2 golf balls next to each other in the inguinal canal when it poked out, which was all the time from the moment I got out of bed in the morning. It was never painful, but it was super annoying especially because I’m an extremely active guy.

Absolutely It Is Possible

I worked to figure out the best way to go about healing my inguinal hernia naturally with absolutely no results until about six months ago. That’s when everything I was doing just started clicking. Through trial and error I figured it out! Literally within three weeks my inguinal hernia was half the size. Then 3 months later it was the size of an M&M. Now I am at a point where the hernia does not poke out ever. I never feel pressure at all except a tiny bit when I am in a forward sitting position.

What Do I Have To Do?

You have to commit to putting in the work. Your inguinal hernia is not just going to get better by itself. There is a weakness in the muscles and fascia that hold the intestine in place which is why you have a hernia in the first place. Strengthen those muscles, and you are one step closer to getting to the point where your hernia will be gone.

If you are not willing to put in the work, then you might as well just go get surgery because healing will never happen.

If you are willing to put in the work, then I think you will find that these exercises hit the spot perfectly. They are designed to target the muscles around the inguinal canal in order to hold the abdominal contents in place, and they do exactly that.

Now I’m not saying that these exercise alone are going to be able to cure every inguinal hernia out there, because there is a lot more that goes into it than just this, but they will get you moving in the right direction.

If your interested in seeing what else I’ve had to do in order to get my inguinal hernia where it is now (there are a few key things), feel free to check out some of my other posts and my youtube channel.

Here Are The Exercises

Healing An Inguinal Hernia With Exercise

Regardless of what the medical establishment will tell you, you can heal an inguinal hernia with exercise. These are the most effective exercises I have found to get it done:

  • Exercise #1 Leg Pulls
  • Exercise #2 Sleeping Bag (or pillow) Squeeze
  • Exercise #3 Leg L’s
  • Exercise #4 Reverse Swim
  • Exercise #5 V-Ups
  • Exercise #6 Knee Circle Leg Extensions
  • Exercise #7 V-Downs
  • Exercise #8 Around The World
  • Exercise #9 Straight Leg Sit-Ups
  • Exercise #10 Straight Leg Side Ups

I also do a couple yoga breathing exercises that you can see here.

How Often Should I Do It?

From my experience about 2-3 times a week is the max. When I first tried it I was doing it more than that, but I quickly realized that the muscles would get really fatigued and the hernia would want to poke out more often. So I cut it back to 2 times a week, and it was perfect. Start slow and don’t go crazy. For some people it’s hard to start slow (me included), but believe me, it will be much better if you do.

How Long Will I Have To Do This?

Probably forever at some level. Every time you do the workout you go up 1 rep for each exercise. By the time I got to 30 reps I felt like I didn’t need to wear the hernia belt  anymore to keep my hernia from poking out. But the last thing you want to do is get to that point, then just stop the workout. I plan on doing these for the rest of my life in order to keep the area strong and reduce the risk of the hernia popping out again.

Recently, I got to a point where I was doing 50 reps of each exercise. The workout was taking me so long that I decided to strap some 5lbs weights to my ankles and start back over at 10 reps. I’ll keep you guys posted on how it goes!

Remember, without commitment you have nothing. If you don’t want surgery, then don’t get it! Commit yourself to healing and you will heal. The body is a healing machine.

Healing My Hernia Status Update 7/25/2017

My Natural Hernia Cure Update 7/25/2017

Since I was feeling so good after the last video update that I made, I decided to go for a full day with no hernia belt on to see if the hernia would actually stay in. This is something I haven’t done in a few years. I was super nervous, but I ended up having good results!
Usually, as soon as I wake up I put on the hernia belt so that it doesn’t have a chance to pop out. I feel like this is an essential part of healing. On this morning however I didn’t put it on. The first thing I did was the yoga exercises that I have been doing to heal the hernia. I had some work to do around the house, so after I was done with the exercises, I cleaned the pool, and did everything I needed to do. Nothing too strenuous, like heavy lifting or anything like that, but just steady moving around.
My wife and I decided that we were going to go food shopping, and to run some other errands, so I brought the hernia belt with me just in case. We were out all day going from store to store. We stopped to eat lunch, which really worried me, because the weight of the food in my stomach would really make the hernia bulge out in the past. But, surprisingly there was nothing! No bulge at all. There was a tiny bit of pressure, but it was a different kind of pressure than what I was feeling before. It feels like the hernia pushing on the inside of the muscle. It’s hard to describe.
My wife was laughing at me all day because I kept sticking my hand in my waste band to check if the hernia was bulging out. I probably looked a little weird, but whatever. I was like the honey badger, and didn’t give a shit. (click here if you don’t know about the honey badger)
By the time we got home it was about 6:30 pm. I was starting to get really nervous that the hernia was going to start popping out, so I decided that I wasn’t going to chance it anymore. I went ahead and put the hernia belt on since I still had to mow the lawn, and do a couple other things around the house. I’ve never realized how much comfort I get mentally from wearing the hernia belt every day. Just being able to do things and not worry so much about it popping out.
All in all it was great for me to see how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time. 1 month ago I would have never been able to even think about not wearing the belt, because as soon as I would get out of bed I would have a lump the size of two golf balls stacked on top of each other.
I’m not sure if I could have made it the full day or not without wearing the hernia belt. I just didn’t want to chance it popping out and setting me back. That’s why I decided to put it on.
I can’t tell you how exciting it is to look down in the shower and not see that lump! I’m making really good progress and will keep you updated as I get further along.

Inguinal Hernia Repair With 5 Yoga Moves. Could It be This Easy?

Over the past couple months I have been seriously considering just getting hernia surgery since I haven’t had any luck with my natural inguinal hernia repair. I’ve become annoyed with always having to think about the hernia, and having to wear a hernia belt every day to manage it. Although my annoyance could be coming from an old back injury that I’ve been dealing with for years. It seems that every time I get going with a certain exercise routine and feeling like I might be getting close to being able to heal this sucker up, I end up hurting my back. It gets hurt to the point where all I can do is stretch and lay flat on my back to relieve the pain.

I’ve been dealing with compressed disks in my back since I was about 18 years old. From what I was told, it is from a genetic defect in my spine (my younger brother has the exact same problem). The first time I hurt it I was snowboarding. I went over a ramp, ollied off the top and felt it go. It was so out of place that my torso was off to the side of my body, and I was in extreme pain. If you looked at me straight on, my hips would be off to the right, and my shoulders would be off to the left. For about two weeks all I could do was lay on my back on the floor in riving pain. It was brutal.

Since then I have learned to live with it, and have been able to manage it pretty well for over 20 years now. I will go months with  my back feeling great, with the pain being about at a level 2, feeling like I am getting in really good shape, then bam, it’ll start hurting again. Back to level 9 type pain. All it takes is a mistimed step into a little pothole, or twisting a little too much.

Once it happens, I feel like every time I move I am going to break in half. It’s pretty awesome (sarcasm). It doesn’t get to the point like it did when I was younger, where I can’t stand straight, but still painful enough to restrict a lot of movement. I look like an old man when I get up out of a chair because it takes me a minute to stand up straight.

This is what I’ve been dealing with since I made my last post. A little while after I fixed the pain in my shoulder I started feeling really good and flexible, then…….. my back starts up. So I started doing yoga about a month ago. Since yoga is all about elongating muscles, building core strength and getting in touch with your body, I figured it would probably be great for me. I’ve been feeling really good except for the forward fold, and upward dog poses which are pictured here:

I could barely get past a flat back position at first trying to do the forward fold, but within a fews weeks I was able to touch my finger tips to the floor. The upward facing dog, I cannot do at all, so I have to skip that part of the practice because it causes too much pain.

During this whole time that I was supposed to be attempting a “natural inguinal hernia repair” I have been trying to work through all this other pain in my body that is more acute. Although it’s annoying, I can manage my hernia daily without pain, but these other things that have been happening are causing too much daily pain to just work around. So I started looking for yoga moves that would be beneficial for someone with a hernia and found a website that had a bunch of yoga exercises that were supposed to be good for a hernia. I originally had the link listed here, but it has since been changed, and I can’t find the page any longer, but the videos are still up on youtube, and listed below.

It takes you through a few different yoga exercises that seem way too simple to have any affect, but I’m going to mix them in with my daily yoga practice and see what happens. After all, I’m treating this as an experiment anyway, so no harm in trying!

There is a breathing exercise that you can do throughout the day wether you’re at your desk, watching TV, or whatever, and goes like this:

Pull in your Abdomen (for Inguinal) Hold for 3 Seconds, release slowly. Repeat this 10 times. Do it once every hour throughout the day. Avoid it for 2 hours after meals. Increase holding duration to 5-7 seconds when you are comfortable.

Then there are some videos showing the yoga asanas (I know they are a little cheesy):

Inguinal Hernia Repair With Five Yoga Moves
    1. Pavanmuktasana
    2. Uddiyan in sabasana
    3. Utthan padasana hands on hernia
    4. Sahaj agnisar
    5. Sabasana

Could it really be that easy? I don’t know but I’m going to try it and see. I’m going to mix these in with my daily yoga practice. Hopefully I can keep my back and everything else healthy, and continue working on this long enough to see some sort of results.

For now I’m still opting out of surgery, even though some days I am just over it. I think I have to remain patient and work through all the bullshit that my body throws at me so that I can get to a point where I can really focus on trying to come up with a truly natural inguinal hernia repair.

I’ll let you know what happens!
